Essay on New Life, New Hope

The production of computer and technological information, particularly hardware and software development, encourages me to pursue my dream of becoming a full-fledged computer engineer. This goal will be easily realized if I am admitted to the University of Washington, the major of computer engineering. I believe that I will be able to maximize my potential by completing this major in a prestigious and reputable academic institution like the University of Washington. Computer engineering will give me new hope and lead me to a new life.

As a 35-year-old Muslim from Morocco who has been living in the United States for the past four years, I consider myself blessed despite the hardships that I had to face. Although I was born and raised in a poor family of nine in Morocco, I went to college and majored in physique-chemistry. It is when I developed an interest in global warming and the means to overcome this environmental crisis. But it was difficult for my father to support our family needs, so I stopped in my study.

Due to my limited education I was not be able to find a good job to support my large family and their basic needs like food rent and utilities, so I accepted a job as manager with my friend’s internet facility for few hundred dirham ($100), it was not enough of course, but at least it was something that made me feel that I was actively doing my part to help my family.

Luck came my way when I met my wife online while I was working at night. From that moment all my life was changed in all aspects and the despair was defeated by hope in new life with new perspectives. I arrived in the United States and married my wife who provided me with much love and assistance in pursuing my education, with her help and my dedication to go back to school. I was able to disregard the occasional discrimination that I faced here in the United States, specifically in connection with my race, culture, and religion. I felt these things were especially amplified after the tragic event of September 11, 2001.

When the opportunity to go back to school presented itself, I did not hesitate to grab it to ultimately realize my goal of becoming a computer engineer. My interest in this field was further stimulated while working as a manager of an Internet facility. Since then, I wanted to become more proficient in hardware and software technology. The honor of being a UW graduate and attaining this degree will enable me to land a good job and provide me and my family with the opportunity to have an improved way of living. I believe that the knowledge and skills that I will acquire from studying computer engineering in the University of Washington would also enable me to contribute something valuable to technological evolution and human existence, especially my parents and my sweet wife.

Speaking about my personal characteristics, I’d like to say that I am a goal-oriented, self-confident and responsible person who always tries to achieve the established goals. I have already developed good leadership skills which will help me in my learning process, including good listening skills and communication skills, decision-making skills and adaptability.  Moreover, I am sure that I will be able to overcome any difficulty which will arise in the process of learning at the University of Washington. As I am against violence, discrimination and racism, my life concept is based on respect for people of all nations and nationalities.

Moreover, I argue that education plays an important role in the life of any individual. Education gives an opportunity for successful development of personality. In addition, education is the foundation of human society that guarantees all people multifold possibilities, including social prosperity, economic wealth, and political stability. That is why it is very important for me to choose a reliable higher education institution. My choice is the University of Washington. I know that the University of Washington is one of the oldest higher education institutions in the world which was founded in 1861. Computer Science and Engineering Department is one of the most prestigious faculties in the University of Washington that has a well-developed training facility, experienced and talented teaching staff consisting of those people who are ready to share their huge knowledge in computer engineering with me. I am sure that the professors of the University of Washington help their students to get profound knowledge in computer engineering and to become excellent specialists who will contribute to the development of computer engineering in the nearest future.
